Serengeti National Park protects 14,763 square kilometres at the heart of the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Tanzania's first national park takes its name from the Maasai word Siringet, associated with the idea of a wide, endless plain—a fitting description for a landscape that seems to move beyond every horizon.
The plains are famous for the Great Migration, a circular search for pasture and water involving vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Yet the Serengeti is never only one event. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and more than 500 recorded bird species inhabit a mosaic of short-grass plains, kopjes, river country, woodland and rolling hills.

When to visit
Best Time to Visit
The Serengeti is rewarding throughout the year. These windows guide initial planning; they do not promise a herd location or wildlife event. Rainfall can shift movement earlier, later or into a different part of the ecosystem.
- December to March — southern plains and Ndutu
- Green landscapes and seasonal calving activity may concentrate wildlife in the southern Serengeti ecosystem, including areas within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- April to June — green season and western movement
- The herds often move through central and western areas as the rains ease; roads, crossings and camp operations require flexible planning.
- July to October — western and northern Serengeti
- Drier conditions often draw herds northward, with river crossings possible but never predictable or guaranteed.
- November and December — returning rains
- Fresh grass and short rains may begin drawing wildlife south again, while central Serengeti continues to offer resident wildlife.

- By road
- Most northern itineraries enter from the Ngorongoro side through Naabi Hill; western approaches can connect through the Lake Victoria and Mwanza side. Travel time varies significantly by route and conditions.
- By air
- Airstrips serve central, southern, eastern, western and northern sectors, with scheduled or charter links potentially available from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

- Is the Great Migration always inside Serengeti National Park?

- Are river crossings guaranteed?
- No. Crossings are spontaneous, can occur at several points and may happen before or after a traveller's stay.
