Mahale: Chimpanzees Between Mountains and Lake

Arrive by boat beneath forested mountains, listen for chimpanzee calls among the trees and end the day beside the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika—far beyond Tanzania's familiar safari trail.

Discover Tanzania Differently

The destination

Mahale Mountains National Park protects 1,613 square kilometres along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Forested slopes rise behind sandy coves and clear water, while woodland, mountain streams and high ridges create a landscape that feels entirely different from Tanzania's open-plains safari country.

The park was established in 1985 to protect an important wild chimpanzee population and its habitat. Chimpanzee trekking is the defining experience, but Mahale is not only about one primate encounter. Forest walks, monkeys, birds, butterflies, waterfalls, mountains and lodge-led lake activities create a journey with its own pace—active in the morning, restorative by the shore.

With Urithi, Mahale is a premium, schedule-led destination. Flights, boat transfers, camp openings, trekking rules and guest fitness are matched before confirmation. Mahale can stand alone, form the lakeside chapter of the flagship Katavi combination, or connect with Serengeti and Zanzibar to bring a rare experience into a familiar Tanzania journey.

What you'll do

Experience Mahale

Chimpanzee trekking

Walk with the required park or lodge guide according to current chimpanzee location, trail conditions, group limits, guest health, age and fitness.

Forest walks

Approved natural trails for monkeys, birds, butterflies, plants, streams and waterfalls, with pace adjusted to weather and ability.

Boat cruising

Explore the shoreline through an authorised operator while observing lake, mountain and birdlife from a safe distance.

Lake activities

Swim, snorkel or kayak only where the lodge's current safety assessment, equipment, guide and weather conditions permit.

Mountain hiking

A longer route such as Mount Nkungwe, only with the approved guide, realistic hours, fitness assessment, weather plan and emergency support.

Birding and photography

Slower walks, boat time and shoreline light for specialist interests, while protecting chimpanzees from crowding and intrusive behaviour.

When to visit

Best Time to Visit

Mahale's seasons influence forest trails, chimpanzee movement, lake conditions, flights and camp operations. Trekking difficulty can change from day to day even within the same month, so this guide supports planning rather than promising an easy encounter.

June to October — classic dry-season window
Trails are generally drier and, as the season progresses, chimpanzees may spend more time on lower slopes. High demand means early planning.
November to December — short-rain transition
The forest becomes greener and weather more variable; flights, boats, trail conditions and camp operations are checked for your exact dates.
January to February — green-season possibility
Mahale can remain rewarding for forest, lake and primates, but humidity, chimpanzee movement and operating patterns require clear expectations.
March to May — heavier rains
Trails may be more demanding and some camps or scheduled services can reduce or pause operations; quoted only after a live supplier and access check.
Getting there
By scheduled or charter air
The confirmed light-aircraft service on selected operating days, followed by the camp's stated boat or ground-and-boat transfer.
By water from Kigoma
A private boat, ship-and-local-boat or other approved plan may be possible, with vessel, duration, safety, weather and staging made explicit.
From Zanzibar or Serengeti
Through the confirmed mainland or safari-hub route rather than a permanent nonstop promise, with the island hotel transfer and any overnight connection protected.
Mahale versus Gombe
Mahale is the more remote, premium mountains-and-lake journey; Gombe suits a shorter Kigoma-based chimpanzee and heritage experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Mahale?
June to October is the classic window. Later dry-season months may bring chimpanzees to lower slopes, while wetter periods can still work when camps, flights and trail conditions are operating.
How many nights should I stay?
Three nights is a practical scheduled-flight minimum; four nights gives better flexibility for more than one trekking opportunity and time by Lake Tanganyika.
Will I definitely see chimpanzees?
No. The community is wild and moves naturally. Guides use current tracking information, but location, trek length, viewing time and behaviour cannot be guaranteed.
How fit do I need to be?
Trekking may range from a relatively short forest walk to a long, steep and humid day. Please disclose mobility, fitness and medical concerns before confirmation.
Can children trek with chimpanzees?
TANAPA's published rules do not permit visitors under 12 to visit the chimpanzees. Urithi reconfirms the current minimum age and camp policy for every booking.
Can I combine Mahale with Katavi?
Yes. This is the strongest Western Tanzania combination, pairing open-plains wildlife with chimpanzees, forest and Lake Tanganyika.
Can I swim in Lake Tanganyika?
Only where the lodge or authorised provider currently permits it after assessing water, wildlife, weather, currents, health and supervision. Never assume all shoreline areas are safe.
