Gombe National Park protects just 56 square kilometres along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, making it Tanzania's smallest national park by area. More than a hundred chimpanzees live in Gombe today, several habituated communities among them, alongside olive baboons, red colobus and other forest monkeys. The terrain is genuinely steep — narrow trails climb and drop through valleys cut by streams running down to the lake — so trekking here is real, sweaty work rather than a stroll, and mornings generally offer the best chance of finding the chimpanzees before they move deeper into the forest.
Access is part of Gombe's character. There is no road to the park; every visit begins with a boat across Lake Tanganyika from Kigoma, the same lakeside town that connects to Ujiji and the Livingstone Memorial. Dhow boat transfer
The approximately two-hour boat crossing from Kigoma is itself part of the experience — open lake views and a genuine sense of arrival.
Kigoma and Ujiji heritage visit
A trip to Ujiji town and the Livingstone Memorial, with the option of a local fishing-village stop, usually built into the Kigoma nights either side of Gombe.

- June to October — drier trekking season
- Generally firmer trails and a more predictable boat crossing make this the easiest period to plan; book early, as camp capacity is limited.
- November to February — short-rain to green season
- Greener forest and fewer visitors, with more variable trail conditions and occasional afternoon rain.
- March to May — long rains
- Steep trails become more demanding and the lake crossing more weather-dependent; quoted only after a live check of camp and boat operations.
Getting there
- By air to Kigoma
- The confirmed scheduled or charter flight from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or another hub to Kigoma, followed by the approved dhow boat transfer to Gombe.
- By road to Kigoma
- A long overland option from Sumbawanga or other western towns, realistic only with road conditions, driver hours and timing confirmed in advance.

- An approximately two-hour boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika, weather and lake-condition permitting, arranged with an approved operator.
