Southern Tanzania · Rufiji River · Wildlife · Fly-in safari
Follow the Rufiji through channels, lakes and woodland—moving from wildlife drives to the water, from broad horizons to the smaller signs revealed on a guided walk.
Nyerere National Park protects approximately 30,893 square kilometres in southern Tanzania, making it the country's largest national park. Created in 2019 from part of the former Selous Game Reserve and named for Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the park carries both a nationally important name and a vast wilderness identity.
The Rufiji River system gives Nyerere its distinctive rhythm. River channels, lakes, sandbanks, woodland and open country allow travellers to experience the landscape from more than one perspective. A wildlife drive may reveal elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, antelope, African wild dog or abundant birdlife; a professionally operated boat journey shifts attention to hippo, crocodile, waterbirds and animals approaching the banks. Every sighting remains wild and unpromised.
Nyerere's commercial strength is access. Current aviation networks connect the park with Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Ruaha and other safari hubs, making it one of the most understandable entries into Southern Tanzania. The flight, airstrip, camp transfer and activity programme still need careful matching—especially during wetter months or when connecting to an international departure.
Every package can be adjusted by travel date, group size, accommodation style and onward destination.
