The destination
Nyerere National Park protects approximately 30,893 square kilometres in southern Tanzania, making it the country's largest national park. Created in 2019 from part of the former Selous Game Reserve and named for Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the park carries both a nationally important name and a vast wilderness identity.
The Rufiji River system gives Nyerere its distinctive rhythm. River channels, lakes, sandbanks, woodland and open country allow travellers to experience the landscape from more than one perspective. A wildlife drive may reveal elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, antelope, African wild dog or abundant birdlife; a professionally operated boat journey shifts attention to hippo, crocodile, waterbirds and animals approaching the banks. Every sighting remains wild and unpromised.

Best Time to Visit
Nyerere changes with rain, river level, roads and camp operations. This guide supports planning, but live conditions determine the actual activity programme.
- June to October — classic dry season
- Generally drier roads and stronger concentration around remaining water make this the easiest period to plan; availability tightens during peak months.
- November to February — green season
- Greener landscapes, birding and fewer visitors can be rewarding, with intermittent rain and more variable roads, water and flight operations.
- March to May — long rains
- Some camps and air services may reduce or pause, roads can become difficult and river conditions may affect boating; quoted only after a live supplier check.

- From Zanzibar

- How many nights should I stay?
- Three nights is the practical minimum for a focused fly-in safari. Four nights offers better flexibility for wildlife drives, boating and an approved walk.
- Can I fly from Zanzibar?
- Yes. Current operators publish Zanzibar–Nyerere connections, but exact date, airstrip, baggage and hotel transfer must be confirmed before booking.
- Is a two-night safari from Zanzibar worthwhile?
- Yes, when flights and camp location protect meaningful activity time. It is Urithi's short high-conversion product, not a promise to complete every experience.
- What makes Nyerere different?
- Its vast scale and Rufiji River system support wildlife drives, boat safaris and guided walking, creating more variety than a vehicle-only programme.
- Will I see African wild dogs?
- They are an important part of the park's wildlife story but remain highly mobile and cannot be guaranteed.
- Are boat safaris always available?
